Laura Harrison, Founder and Executive Director
I have spent my life searching for my mission and have found it with The Selene Center. My undergraduate coursework in Anthropology and Women's Studies introduced me to the feminist movement and international issues of violence against women. My graduate work in Justice Studies delved further into systems of oppression and the dynamics of power and control that exist in abusive relationships. After working for ten years in the nonprofit field, I was alarmed at the barriers that exist in my hometown for domestic violence victims to access resources. Inspired by the strength of survivor, Lisa Gorsuch, The Selene Center was founded.
Lisa Gorsuch, Survivor, Advocate and Board of Directors
One in three women will experience domestic violence in their lifetime. I am one of them. When I reached out for help, I knew there were some gaps in services. I had no idea how unobtainable resources would be. Now, being a survivor I would like to see others in the same position get the help and support they need. When Laura and I started doing more research we decided there has to a better way. At the Selene Center we are here to give emotional support, plan for your safety, and provide legal advocacy. We go through the options with you to see what is best for you and your family. I want to see you become the person you deserve to be.
